They started in 1983 with James Hetfield on Vocals, Dave Mustaine lead guitar & Ron Mcguvney on bass. Later in that year Ron Mcguvney was kicked out and then they got Cliff Burton to replace him. Then Dave Mustaine was booted out because of a drinking problem. He was replaced by Kirk Hammett. James Hetfield then learned the guitar and played rhythm for the band. But then in 1986 Cliff Burton died in a tragic accident when they were on tour so they got bassist Jason Newstedd to replace cliff. And thats the band lineup today.
